BROAD INFORMATION

Picture1.png

Within the CO-POLYSENS project, we aimed to develop innovative sensors for gas detection, relying on special combined materials: tungsten oxide (WO3) and polymers (polypyrrole – PPY and polyaniline – PANI). These materials, when used together, become extremely efficient at detecting the presence of toxic gases in the air, which is vital for monitoring air quality in industrial and urban environments. One such toxic gas is ammonia (NH3), which has a strong and unpleasant smell, similar to the smell of chlorine or soap. It is widely used in various industries, including the production of fertilizers, cleaning products, and pesticides. Inhalation of ammonia can severely irritate the respiratory tract and eyes, causing coughing, breathing difficulties, a burning sensation, and excessive tearing. Prolonged exposure to ammonia can lead to lung damage and other organ injuries, and in extreme cases, it can be fatal, hence the need for sensors to detect its presence.

What are sensors?

Imagine the sensor as an extremely sensitive "electronic nose" that can "smell" and identify dangerous gases, even in very low concentrations. This ability makes it indispensable in preventing industrial accidents or monitoring air pollution.

What have we achieved within the project?

  1. Creating ammonia-sensitive membranes: We developed an innovative method using laser technology to produce "thin layers" from our special mix of tungsten oxide and polymers. These membranes represent the "heart" of our sensors.

  2. Detailed characterization: We thoroughly analyzed these new materials, studying their structure, surface appearance, and how they respond to different concentrations of ammonia. We ensured they are capable of efficiently detecting this gas, by repeating experiments of production, characterization, and testing.

  3. Remarkable performance: Tests have shown that our sensors can rapidly and accurately detect the presence of ammonia. They are sensitive, fast, and can be used in a wide range of applications. They operate at room temperature, which leads to lower energy consumption.

What is the impact of the project?

This technology has the potential to improve how we monitor and protect the environment and workplaces. The sensors can be used in factories, cities, and even homes to ensure clean and safe air for everyone. In conclusion, the CO-POLYSENS project is not just a remarkable scientific achievement but also a step forward in protecting our health and the environment. By rapidly and accurately detecting toxic gases, we can prevent industrial accidents and combat air pollution, building a safer and cleaner future for all of us.
